Tips and tricks

  • If you are interested in visiting historical part of Istanbul, choose the hotels which are situated in the Fatih district.
  • The Beyoglu district is suitable for travelers who prefer a European atmosphere. Just make sure the windows do not overlook a noisy street.
  • Before visiting the tourist attractions and mosques, check the working hours. Many of them are closed during prayer time.
  • When visiting mosques and temples, women should cover their head: don’t forget to bring a headscarf with you.
  • Most small shops don’t work on Sundays, and on weekdays they are closed for lunch from 1 PM to 2 PM.
  • Do not buy Turkish delight at spontaneous markets or supermarkets. Visit specialized shops that sell sweets with an original taste.
  • When going to local markets, prepare some cash (Turkish lira). Don’t make purchases using dollars or euros: the prices will be much higher. You can change money at a favorable rate at Taksim and Beyazıt Squares.
  • Bargaining is a part of local culture. While making purchases at a market, do not immediately agree with the initial cost of the goods. By means of bargaining, you will be able to cut the price by half!
