Tips and tricks

  • According to the local etiquette, you should be the first to greet the service personnel in shops and restaurants. Just say «Bonjour!» to show your respect.
  • Paris has a great tradition: from October to April, there is a free entrance to the state museums on the first Sunday of every month. You should definitely visit at least one museum during this period! The only place without free entrance is the Louvre.
  • Download a translation app or buy a paper phrasebook. A Parisian is more likely to answer if you talk to him in broken French rather than in any other language.
  • Do not call the waiter “garçon” (sounds like an offensive “hey, boy”). Use “monsieur” or “madame” instead.
  • Top 5 most dangerous places of robbery in Paris are headed by the subway, the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, and the Eiffel Tower. Watch your bags carefully and do not bring large amounts of cash.
  • Smoking is only allowed outdoors, otherwise you will have to pay 136 euros.
