Iglesia de la Concepción

This Church of the Immaculate Conception is the main architectural landmark of the island. Its construction began immediately after the conquest of the island by the conquistadors in the 15th century. A massive bell tower with a belfry and a colonnade can be seen from anywhere in the city. The Holy Cross, stored in the centre of the silver altar, is the main local religious gem. The city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (which means "Holy Cross of Tenerife") owes its name to this ancient relic of 1494.

Plaza de Espana

It is the largest local square, the main element of which is a cross-shaped monument dedicated to the victims of the Spanish Civil War. There is a circular observation deck located at the top of the structure. Plaza de Espana is decorated with a huge fountain full of ocean water.

The Castle of Saint John the Baptist

Annually, the historical reconstruction of the battle is organized here in memory of the unsuccessful attempt of the British squadron to capture Tenerife.

• In Tenerife, cards are accepted everywhere except for public transport and markets. Local banks charge a commission for currency exchange, so it would be better to buy euros in advance in order to save money. We recommend you to have some cash in small bills of 10-20 euros (sellers do not always have change). 
• Many shops close for siesta from 1 PM to 5 PM. On Sundays, they are open until 3 PM only.
• Tenerife is a special economic zone: many goods are much cheaper here than in mainland Spain. The largest shopping centres are located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife: Alcampo la Villa Shopping Center, El Corte Inglés, and Centro Comercial Meridiano are the most popular ones. Sales happen twice a year (in early winter and in mid-summer the discounts can reach 60-70%).
• Be sure to buy local products as souvenirs for your family and friends. Choose such goods as natural cosmetics, volcanic wine, and palm honey. Cigars are also perfect as a souvenir. Canary tobacco is of high quality as the climate of Tenerife is excellent for its cultivation.
• For traditional Spanish delicacies, visit the main market of the island called Nuestra Señora de Africa where you will find jamon, cheese, seafood, turron, and wine. The market is open daily from 8 AM to 2 PM.
